Working with our friends at DairyNZ, we originally built a prototype, or “Beta” product which was taken to key stakeholders both at DairyNZ and out in the field, for testing. This allowed us to understand how it might be improved or indeed whether it would be welcomed by its intended audience, New Zealand’s dairy farmers.

After a resounding “yes please”, the team here at Terabyte got to work on building the Farm Gauge tool.

Built on Umbraco and fully mobile responsive, the tool gathers basic information from the user and then takes them through a series of questionnaires. There are several sections to choose from: Strategy, Feed, Financial, Herd, People, H&S and Wellbeing, Environment and Infrastructure.

Each question (as well as the answer) is weighted, and completion of each questionnaire provides a basic score. By clicking “View full results”, the user is presented with a results dashboard, which breaks down each area of the questionnaire and provides suggested actions for any areas which could use improvement.

A colour-coded key is provided which indicates where the user sits in relation to recommended standards (attention required, focus recommended, fair, good, excellent).

A copy of the report can be printed or shared.

The next stage for this project is to hook the tool up to DairyNZ’s CRM which will allow farmers to store results for later comparison and view those across devices.

Terabyte was given little notice but still managed to build the prototype in quick time. We have had some very good feedback on it since launch, which is encouraging as this tool will underpin much of our work going forward.
