King’s College is one of Auckland’s most outstanding educational institutions, established in 1896 and offering an excellent all-round learning environment for young men and women.
Starting life as a simple home page redesign, this project eventually turned into an overhaul of the website design and information architecture (IA).
It had become increasingly clear that this website required an overhaul in both design and IA terms. The audience (parents, both existing and prospective, students, staff) needed to navigate this extremely content-heavy site easily and often from mobile devices.
In order to achieve a clear navigation, the updated site map was reviewed in close partnership with the team at King’s, who were very focused on ensuring the new site was comprehensive, intuitive and user friendly. A left-hand-side navigation was added, together with a mega menu, enabling the user to easily find content without endless clicks or “drilling down”, as had been the case previously. This also provides flexibility for growth of the site.

Along with the IA redesign, close attention was paid to the visual design, minimising copy and maximising headings and clear visuals, pointing to the location of content.
Many pieces of new functionality were added, including the “News Hub” or media section. This showcases the school’s events calendar and news updates, and provides a platform for featured videos and publications. A comprehensive and mobile friendly online application form was also introduced, integrated with the school’s CRM, enabling paper-free application to the school for the first time in its history.
Three months post go-live and the numbers are looking great:
