So, Webstock happened. As always, it was full of inspirational speakers, delicious food and covetable swag. Whilst we may have got numb bums from the seating, we shared, drank coffee and nurtured our vibrant and creative industry. So what exactly did we learn?
Elle Luna - The Crossroads of Should and Must
Elle Luna kicked things off with an inspiring session about making our dreams possible and tangible. It all comes down to two paths in life: 'should' and 'must', "two worlds that are equally appealing but so different." 'Should' is how other people expect us to show up in the world and the things that have gripped us. 'Must' represents our deepest desires, who we are, what we believe, our urges, and cravings. Should is external whilst Must is internal. We'll find that in life we're always at the crossroads.
"Choosing Must is the greatest thing we can do for our lives," Elle said. To do this you need to take a big leap of faith. She shows that it is possible that your job, career, and your calling can be one and the same and that will lead us to our own bliss. When we live in our dreams, we "no longer go to work, we become work."
What was refreshing with Elle’s talk was the way she articulated and visualised the question sharing her own journey as an artist. She gently guided us through what one could class as an urban take on enlightenment.
Quotes we especially liked were:
"The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." - Mark Twain
"There is dignity in all work." - Philip Glass (composer)
"Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull." - Rumi
Elle also provided us some ways we can find, manifest and nurture our Must.
Look at who were you as a child, what did you love doing?
Create space to find and develop your Must.
Find small chunks of time to make it happen (10 mins every day is all you need).
Remember we are addicted to being busy so find and protect a space where you can just focus on your Must.
Join a community so you don’t have to stand on your own.
Share! You never know who is out there to receive your gift.
Elle’s talk struck at our core being. We all have desires, some of us live them, some of us don’t. Maybe it’s a mix. Either way there are many reasons we may have all skipped back and forth across the line of Should and Must, mostly because Must is big, scary and uncertain. But that's what life is about, right? That is what makes every day exciting and unique.
So here’s to not shying away from uncertainty and grabbing hold of our Must.
