Terabyte is celebrating 30 years of digital this year, and what better way to celebrate than with a trip down memory lane! We've definitely seen digital transform over the years – from our beginnings as Teramedia working with CD-ROM to today as Terabyte Interactive building a range of innovative digital solutions. We've dug into the archives to bring you the very best bits from our past 30 years!

    Tera FACT: Teramedia was born

    Teramedia was launched in 1990 as a News Corporation venture that designed, developed and marketed an award-winning edutainment internet portal and companion CD-ROM titles to children and K-12 educators in the USA.

  • Kiwi Kids ABC Te Papa CDROM Kiwi Kids ABC Te Papa CDROM

    Te Papa – KiwiKids

    Teramedia partnered with Te Papa to build a programme that could teach kids the alphabet the 'Kiwi' way. Kiwi Kids ABC contained fun animations and sounds reinforcing letter recognition, phonics and the concept of letter combinations.

    Tera FACT: Rupert Murdoch once owned Terabyte

    Having established a strong newspaper publishing network, media giant INL turned its interests to building a magazine division in New Zealand, specifically in the digital space.
    Thus, INL took a 25% interest in Terabyte in 1994, with this increasing to 51% in June 1995.

    Teramedia – Young Astronauts

    Designed based on the Young Astronaut Council's Curriculum, this CD-ROM contained 15 interactive activities and made maths, science and space an educational and entertaining resource.

  • Americas Cup Virtual Spectator Americas Cup Virtual Spectator

    Virtual Spectator

    Terabyte was the co-mastermind behind Virtual Spectator, the software first used to display the on-screen graphics for the America’s Cup. Virtual Spectator has now been developed into its own brand and is still used during the America’s Cup and for other sporting events worldwide.

    News Corporation – Team Newscorp

    Terabyte designed and built a large, complex website for Team NewsCorp and delivered the entire project without any face-to-face contact as the client was USA-based! A secure client-specific Extranet made this all possible.

  • HSBC Global Education Website HSBC Global Education Website

    HSBC Bank – Global Education Challenge

    Terabyte designed HSBC’s Global Education Challenge with entertaining activities encouraging kids to have fun while learning! In just four months, more than 12,000 children worldwide had registered on the site to compete weekly.

  • Donate NZ

    DonateNZ was a free Trade me-type site we developed which put the community in touch with organisations to donate goods and services – like online dating for donating! This was our Developer Ollie’s first ever project with Terabyte and he’s never left!

  • NZ Radio Network Website NZ Radio Network Website

    The Radio Network

    Terabyte was selected to take TRN on a journey from radio to radio+online and built a website per station, supporting the station culture, programmes, rich content and, of course, advertising.

    Te Papa – Maori Showbands

    Teramedia partnered with Te Papa to develop the first online exhibition illustrating the stories, memories and vibrancy of the Showbands’ community, all the while ensuring that the user could navigate through the content intuitively.

  • Malaysian Aquarium Journey Kiosk Malaysian Aquarium Journey Kiosk

    Aquawalk – Journey Kiosks

    Kuala Lumpur’s Aquaria takes visitors on a path from the rainforest down to the sea. Terabyte designed an extensible database-driven kiosk platform that allowed visitors to learn more about the creatures that inhabit the various aquarium zones.

    Aquawalk – Discovery Kiosks

    Aquaria turned to Terabyte to build a range of kiosks and a deployment engine to manage their digital assets. Terabyte designed and built kiosks that allowed users to interact with underwater creatures and interesting facts and figures!

  • Volcanoes Exhibit Auckland Museum Volcanoes Exhibit Auckland Museum

    Auckland Museum – Volcanoes Interactive Exhibitions

    Working closely with TV One News and the institute of geological and nuclear sciences, Terabyte created a news bulletin for the entrance to the Auckland Museum’s Volcanoes gallery, and what appears to be an imminent volcanic eruption.

  • Christchurch Airport App

    Before the time of apps, we spun up a Christchurch International Airport mobile site to help visitors find all their flight and airport info on the go. With a simple design, it allowed easy navigation to airport and flight information, maps, and parking details for those on the go, with special considerations for earthquakes too!

  • Black Sheep Movie Site

    We teamed up with Black Sheep the Movie to design and build their website which hosted the movie trailer, cast and crew information and even some interactive elements! What a cool New Zealand project to be a part of!

  • Fonterra

    Back in 2005, we helped Fonterra redefine their customer's online experience with a more customer-centric information architecture, giving them a way to showcase products, news and events to enhance their business for their customers around the world.

  • Palmerston North City Council

    We asked Charnae, one of our longest-standing Terabyters, about her favourite project she's ever worked on and WOW this one is a blast from the past. The PNCC website enabled users to gain information about events and services and interact with the Council online helping them get things done quickly. Testing the PNCC website was Charnae's first ever job back in 2008, and since then we've redesigned and rebuilt their site to stay up to date & add new online services.

    Terabyte designed and built a new business.newzealand.com website with 7 regional content views across 4 languages all hosted in a multi-server infrastructure in Amazon Cloud!

  • New Zealand Winegrowers Website New Zealand Winegrowers Website

    NZ Winegrowers

    We created a brand new digital experience for NZ Wine. After a series of workshops and ideation, we created a fully-responsive marketing platform built on Umbraco 7. The site takes the user on a journey through richly designed, clear pathways through NZ’s wine regions, industry news, information and education, and it integrates with the CRM for over 500 personalised winery pages. We were even nominated for a Webby award for this solution!

    NZ Parliament

    From 2005 to 2018, Terabyte transformed NZ Parliament from a physical publisher to publishing millions of online pages from legacy publishing systems which enabled citizens to make submissions and petitions online.

  • The Hermitage Mount Cook Website The Hermitage Mount Cook Website

    Hermitage Hotel

    We transformed The Hermitage Hotel at Mt Cook to direct online bookings with full integration and a complex cloud-based hotel management system. This was the start of many tourism businesses transformed online over the following years.

  • Starship

    We teamed up with Starship Hospital to build and then later redesign their website with the goal to raise awareness and generate donations for the healthcare service!

  • Real Journeys

    Back in 2012, we partnered with Real Journeys to redevelop their website including a fully integrated end-to-end booking solution. Since then, we’ve formed a long-standing partnership and for redesign and development projects!

    As Cardrona's digital partner we've worked closely & collaborated over the years to design and build complex booking integrations as well as improve their user experience with weather feeds and live statuses for their lifts, runs & trails.⁠

  • Selwyn Foundation

    We collaborated with the Selwyn Foundation to deliver an exciting and stunning experience to showcase their work and engage their visitors. Built on Umbraco 7 and fully responsive, this website is full of rich and gorgeous imagery. Terabyte partnered with the Foundation’s brand agency, Big Communications, who were a pleasure to work with and provided valuable brand guidance too.

  • Rosie's World

    Rosie’s World is a unique educational website we designed and built for DairyNZ with resources for teachers nationwide. To get classes learning about the dairy industry we designed fun and engaging teaching materials, all managed in Umbraco!

  • Graeme Dingle Foundation

    The Graeme Dingle Foundation is an inspiring charity working with NZ youth and we were able to design and build a custom WordPress site to allow them to motivate potential donors, mentors and participants. We made sure to integrate their site with a secure payment gateway to accept donations and custom email automation to nurture new sign ups!

  • GoalsGetter

    We helped Nikko AM and their sister company GoalsGetter who work in investment & asset management drive brand awareness with multiple creative marketing campaigns combining digital platforms, print and out of home media.

  • Instant Finance

    We transformed the Instant Finance website to create a digital experience which allowed users to apply for a loan online! With an online calculator and integrated forms for users to fill out, this project streamlined the way Instant Finance interacts with their users!

  • PlaceMakers Pro App

    We built the first version of the PlaceMakers Pro App in 2019 to allow small tradies to access an easy to use pricing and quoting application. Then in 2020, we released an improvement allowing the app to be used as a true retail experience for all users! Users can sign up for a PlaceMakers Pro account right in the app as well as browse from the extensive catalogue of products and create quotes for their DIY project.

  • Snell Packaging

    Snell came to us last year to develop a custom ecommerce solution to support and grow their online B2B customers, increase conversions and simplify the UX. We brought this project to life through multiple complex integrations with third party systems including UCommerce, Microsoft Dynamics, Stripe and Sajari Site Search!
