The Project:
Here at Terabyte we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of
technology innovation. So unsurprisingly, for some time now we've
been examining the way Mobile and Tablet technology is reshaping
digital communications.
When we were approached by a new client as soon as we heard the
words "iPad Application" let's say it didn't take long for us to
confirm our interest! It took even less time for our design and
development team members to lobby to be on the project. It's no
secret we've all been champing at the bit to expand on our Apple
design and development experience.
We can't name the client or show you the application because it
is our clients secret weapon for their sales team. However, we
can highlight what was technically achieved.
Our client needed a solution that would allow their sales team
to demonstrate the company's products and service offerings whilst
on the road, often in areas where 3G and internet connectivity was
limited.
This offline requirement and the importance of being able to
communicate the benefits simply and effectively is ample
justification for an offline application over a web application.
Another advantage of the offline solution in this case is that it
minimises 3G on-line data costs.
They wanted to be able to demonstrate their offerings using a
combination of explanatory videos, rich product brochures and
upcoming events information. They also needed to be able to capture
customer information offline, and have the iPad upload it via the
main website either immediately or later when the iPad goes
on-line.
Designing for Mobile and Tablet has its challenges, such as
touch inputs and greater emphasis on screen real estate. But there
are iOS (Apple's mobile operating system) specific considerations
too, such as the manner in which iOS controls behave and the
transitional options within iOS.
We designed the application to be fully compliant and to utilise
the benefits specific to iOS. Utilising the Appcelerator framework we
were able to take advantage of iOS's native UI components and
functionality to create a fully native app. The iPad application is
deployed over-the-air remotely to the iPads when they're on-line
with an internet connection.
