The Project:
Building on the success of the new nicknz.co.nz site, launched
with Terabyte in September '08, Nickelodeon briefed us to create an
online haven for kiwi kids to celebrate their love of Spongebob
Squarepants.
2009 is the tenth anniversary of the show, which
appeals to one of the widest age brackets of any cartoon. To
deliver the most excitement to fans here in New Zealand, we agreed
to build a graphically rich experience which immerses the user in
Bikini Bottom - the set of the Spongebob Show.
Leveraging existing functionality which was created
for the main Nick site, Terabyte utilised features such as the
"Nick Latest" landing page image rotator, games page and content
submission facilities. These allow Nick to easily provide
constantly new and exciting content, bringing kids back to the site
for fresh discoveries every day.
The Short Arts feature on the main Nick site has
been flooded this year with fan art of Spongebob Squarepants and
his friends. To let kids show off even more of their Spongebob
Artwork and Spongie activities, we built facilities for Fan Art and
a Fan Photo Gallery where kids can submit their images for
featuring on the website.
Also popular on the main Nickelodeon site is the
"Nick Natter" feature, which allows kids to post short shout outs
and snippets of text for all users to read. For Spongebob, we let
kids submit questions about the show through the "Ask your
Spongebob Questions!" section. Every week, the two best questions
will be answered by the Nickelodeon team and posted on the site for
all to see!
The Crew Blog gives a regular insight into the
behind-the-scenes action from the creators of the show, and
emphasises the fact that Nickelodeon are the only source for all of
the best Spongebob news, images, downloads, and
interviews.
Overall, the microsite cleverly uses simple
functionality to provide cute and fun features for kids, and
emphasises the atmosphere with rich graphics and imagery which
transport viewers right into Spongebob's world.
