The Project:
When our friends at Running with Scissors and Monteith's invited
us to create the online experience for Monteith's brand new craft
beer, Single Source, we were delighted.
Monteith's Single Source takes specific ingredients from
carefully chosen growers and combines them with the utmost
care and attention to produce a premium craft lager beer.
The values of attention to detail, and selecting the best people
for the job, really resounded with the Terabyte team and we
followed suit. For this project we selected designers with great
skill in experiential design which embodies brand, and developers
with specific strengths in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax and Umbraco
CMS development (as well as a keen interest in drinking beer!).
As the product was due to launch within a short timeframe, it
was imperative that our solution achieved the goals of
entertaining, engaging, educating and inspiring appreciative beer
drinkers without any fuss.
On launch, Monteith's Single Source is only available in the 29
Craft Bars and for ordering through our website online, which takes
advantage of an existing secure ordering platform owned by DB
Breweries - The Changing Room.
To share the story of the creation of Monteith's Single Source,
the client will produce eight short films documenting the key steps
in crafting the lager. These eight steps are showcased on the
Monteith's Single Source website with accompanying editorial
content giving the full detail of the passion and craft of those
carefully chosen growers and brewers.
For many beer fans, their first experience of Monteith's Single
Source will be away from their computers, so it was important to us
that the website be compatible with mobile devices including iOS
(iPhone and iPad), Android, and Windows mobile. Though it may have
been easier to produce, we steered clear of building the website in
Flash, favouring clever HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Ajax to serve
content and to ensure flexibility for different screen
resolutions.
The version of the site for desktop computers uses a custom
Flash video player, with a fallback to a YouTube embedded video if
the user is browsing on a mobile device - YouTube's HTML5 video
player caters gracefully to iOS devices which don't play nicely
with Flash.
Throughout the production of this project, Monteith's Marketing
Manager, Russell Browne has been impressed with our instant
understanding of the values of their brand and new product, and our
ability to translate that into a beautiful and interesting online
experience which checks all the boxes.
