The production values are gratuitously high-quality, with a bright, easy-to-learn interface and terrific graphics. This is one of the prettiest games I've ever played for free. – Electrocity reviewed on playthisthing.com

The Project:

How is energy generated? How much does it cost? How does it affect the environment? These are some of the questions Genesis Energy wanted to help students answer, and increase their awareness of energy issues and the considerations around them.

Marketing agency Rivet New Zealand came up with the concept of an online game, and approached Terabyte about delivering it. Prototyped over a month and then further developed over a few more, Electrocity is a strategy game which sees players name their very own town and work towards a balance of sustainable energy, city growth and profit. Players have 150 turns to create a city, generate revenue, build power generation and manage the resulting environmental impact while keeping their citizens happy.

Players can save their city at any time and return to it later, and once complete a city can be 'published' to be shared with friends, family, or classmates.

The game was wildly popular with students when it was released to schools, and quickly picked up interest worldwide thanks to several positive reviews in online game publications & blogs. It has gone on to win several major international awards (and be nominated for a Webby), and there are currently about 40,000 cities published on the site.

We don't play it when we are supposed to be working - honest.
