The Project:
Christchurch International Airport wanted to combine 4 existing
websites (one for travelers, one for businesses, and two tourism
based sites) into one all encompassing site - Terabytes challenge
was to ensure the new site looked great, and that all the content
from the existing sites was easily navigable and easy to find.
A series of discovery workshops was undertaken to carefully map
out the Information Architecture for the site, laying the
groundwork for a simple and intuitive navigation. Content of
high-importance was brought forward to the homepage - for example,
our research showed that a huge percentage of the sites existing
traffic was looking for flight arrival and departure times, so we
built an AJAX powered flight search facility and gave it prime
position on the homepage.
The site content was varied - maps, charts, text, images, flight
routes, weather reports, retailer information - so the site needed
to be flexible enough to handle anything the content managers could
throw at it. Quality, standards compliant XHTML / CSS and our own
Dynamic Web Content Management System ensured the site was very
scalable, while remaining good looking, easy to use and fast to
load.
Once the site went live, Christchurch Airport saw visitor
numbers rise on average 37% from the same period one year prior.
The many stakeholders in the project were thrilled with the
outcome, and it seems the sites users are too.
